Stay Hydrated

Stay Hydrated

As the weather warms up, it is important to stay hydrated and cool. Picking up a glass of water not only can help you stay refreshed, but it can also help you lose weight and stay slim for the summer season.

Are you thirsty or hungry?

Did you know your body confuses the feeling of hunger with thirst? If you are unsure if your body is craving food or water, drink a glass and wait 15 minutes. If the feeling subsides you were just feeling mild dehydration. If you drank the water and are still feeling craving something more solid, find something healthy to munch on.

By taking this water test, you are preventing yourself from overeating by determining what your body really needs.

Why does my body confuse these feelings?

In science class, we learned about a little part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This part of our controls many important functions of our body including:

  • Blood Pressure
  • Body Temperature
  • Heart Rate
  • Hunger
  • Sexual Desire
  • Thirst

The confusion between hunger and thirst happens within the hypothalamus.

For those who are severely dehydrated have reported the following symptoms:

  • Deep Yellow or Little to No Urine
  • Dizziness
  • Drop in Blood Pressure
  • Rapid Heart Rate
  • Fever
  • Poor Skin Elasticity

If you feel as though you have one or more of the severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately for treatment.

How Can I Make Myself Drink More Water?

Travel with a Water Bottle: Often enough most people find themselves drinking less water because it is not readily available to them. By bringing a water bottle with you wherever you may go, you are ensuring you can hydrate your body when it needs it.

Add Some Drink Concentrate: Most people who can’t find the bland, dull taste of water will look to other sources to hydrate. The problem is, they often look to the wrong source of hydration. Cut out the sugary fruit juices and sodas, they are making it worse. Adding unsweetened, low-calorie drink concentrates can be an excellent way to add flavor without adding the unwanted extras.

Add Fruits: This fad has been taking the internet by storm as of late. “Detox Water” is all the rage to some, as the fruits and water act as a cleanser to bodily toxins. Add in your favorite fruits to your drink to spice things up.
