What You Need to Know About Genetically Modified Organisms

by Aimee Aristotelous on October 02, 2019

Odds are you have probably heard of the term Genetically Modified Organism or GMO by now, as it’s a hot topic in the nutrition and wellness world. If you’re not exactly sure what a GMO is, you are not alone. In a nutshell, some of the most popular crops (i.e. wheat, soybeans, and corn) in our food supply are “genetically modified” in order to be able to withstand being sprayed by Roundup which is a weed killer that contains glyphosate. Glyphosate, the most widely-used herbicide in the world has been categorized as a “probable human carcinogen” by the World Health Organization. Non-organic soy, corn, wheat, and a variety of other crops have been genetically altered to tolerate direct spraying of the herbicide in order to repel bugs and pests. Items like wheat are also treated with glyphosate containing Roundup right before harvest to increase the speed of germination, resulting in a large majority of grain/gluten-based food products to be left with a glyphosate residue.

There are some concerns that glyphosate, found in Roundup is detrimental to our well-being. In fact, a jury recently determined in the court of law that glyphosate caused a man’s terminal cancer, resulting in an award of over 200 million dollars in damages. An added concern, according to some studies, glyphosate is also linked to other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, infertility, allergies, and cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, soy, corn, and wheat makes up a large majority of our food supply. To avoid GMO foods, look for products labeled as “certified organic” as these items are not allowed to contain genetically modified organisms. Moreover, produce is labeled with PLU (price look-up) codes which are located on the sticker, found on the piece of produce. To guarantee you are not buying a genetically modified food that is likely to have been treated with glyphosate, choose the codes that begin with the number nine—this means the food is organic!
